Fattoria Spinola e l'agriturismo I Mori Gelsi

Ours is a historic residence dating back to the end of the 1400s, when it was a nunnery. In fact there is a consecrated chapel.
Around the mid-1700s it became the country residence of the Goga family, while in the first half of the 1800s the last Cardinal Spinola, Ugo Pietro, who became Cardinal Legate of Perugia and Macerata, appointed by Pope Gregory XVI, bought 3000 hectares with a large villa , of which the Spinola Farm was part.

The registers and correspondence of Cardinal Ugo Pietro are still preserved in the family archives. In 1995 one of the direct descendants, the Marquis Franco Alerame Spinola, heir to the property, renovated a farmhouse of the company and its annex to use it as an agritourism. Over the years, its descendants have preserved its history and activity.

TORGIANO is a fortified medieval village, built at the end of the 13th century, by the will of the Municipality of Perugia, on the remains of an ancient Roman settlement; some finds, identified in the surrounding areas, however, testify to the presence of small settlements since the Etruscan age. During the nineteenth century, while in Umbria there was a general fragmentation of large landholdings, in Torgiano two important land holdings were established: a commenda belonging to the Meniconi Bracceschi counts, who obtained it from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and a vast estate between Perugia and Torgiano which was bought by the marquis and future cardinal Pietro Ugo Spinola. With the unification of Italy the social framework changes further and a bourgeoisie, mercantile, professional and agricultural, appears in the countryside, which intends to modernize and strengthen its revenues, investing in an area naturally suited to viticulture, olive growing, cereal and fruit and vegetable production, requested by the nearby city markets.
Finally, in the last century, despite the intense phase of industrialization that also affected this area in the 1950s and 1960s, Torgiano was able to safeguard its agricultural vocation, optimizing the resources traditionally based on viticulture, olive growing and tobacco growing, which they have made it possible to preserve almost intact a rural landscape that is the backdrop to excellent agricultural production and a quality tourist market.
